SUMMARY:The Sustainable Development Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Sustainable Development Festival\nTo access the Inauguration of the event\, please click here \nFollowing the success of the previous editions\, and five years after the adoption of the UN 2030 Agenda\, the yearly Sustainable Development Festival returns with its fifth edition. The 2021 edition will take place from September 28nd to October 14th. \nThanks to the reputation acquired\, and to the growing mobilization of Italian society on the themes of sustainable development\, the event will represent a further step to encourage Italy to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASviS)\, that brings together over 300 organizations from the economic and social spheres\, organizes the Festival together with its members and with the support of the partners and tutors\, over a period of 17 days\, as many as the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN’s 2030 Agenda[1]. The initiative constitutes a single widespread and inclusive event\, comprising hundreds of events organized throughout the national territory. \nThe Festival was created to raise awareness among growing segments of the population on social\, economic and environmental sustainability\, going beyond subject-matter experts\, in order to foster a cultural shift in individual and collective behaviors\, and to stimulate “bottom-up” requests that commit the Country’s leadership to comply with the agreements undertaken in the UN. Furthermore\, the Festival wants to give voice to citizens\, businesses\, national and local administrations\, universities and civil society in order to foster dialogue and the sharing of best practices on the issues of the 2030 Agenda. \nThe Festival is a unique experience at international level that allows to reach millions of people in Italy every year thanks to the participation of hundreds of organizations all over the Country\, the active role played by universities and the opening of “sustainable development squares” in a number of major Italian cities. This stimulates an unprecedented reflection on the future of our Country\, of Europe and the world.  In 2021\, for the second time\, the Festival was nominated as a finalist for the SDG Action Awards of the UN SDG Action Campaign\, for it being an innovative initiative and a unique experience in the world.

DESCRIPTION:By ITC \nWe are pleased to inform you that applications for the edition 2020-21 of the Master in Social Innovation for Sustainable Development are now open. \nWith a global faculty and participants\, the master will challenge your current beliefs and notions of social innovation with a view to developing a new understanding of its principles and tools. Global development trends show that problems of the Covid 19 crisis\, social exclusion\, youth unemployment\, migration\, climate change\, and ageing society are escalating. By recognizing how social innovation goes beyond technology and current beliefs\, you will explore the implication of different models. Participants will acquire tools and techniques to anticipate change and respond to complex situations in their respective relevant fields. A crucial role for social innovators and entrepreneurs in the implementation of the 2030 SDGs is expected in the medium term. Government agencies are encouraged to seek out “the best social innovations” in their programmes. Entrepreneurs of tomorrow are requested to use their new models to achieve results and scale their services\, including public-private partnerships. \nThe Master duration is of 1 year with 6 weeks* of face-to-face learning activities taking place in Turin\, Italy. \nEssential requirements for admission are to hold a first university degree (minimum 3 years or 180 ETCS) and to be fluent in English. Upon successful completion of the programme\, participants will be awarded a joint 1st level specialization Master from the University of Torino. \nThe deadline for expression of interest for the 2020-21 edition is 30 June 2020. A second round of online applications shall be open until 1st September 2020. Students with an Italian Degree can apply until 30 September 2020. Stiglitz is an American economist and a professor at Columbia University. He is also the co-chair of the High-Level Expert Group on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress at the OECD\, and the Chief Economist of the Roosevelt Institute.  A recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences (2001) and the John Bates Clark Medal (1979)\, he is a former senior vice president and chief economist of the World Bank and a former member and chairman of the (US president’s) Council of Economic Advisers. In 2000\, Stiglitz founded the Initiative for Policy Dialogue\, a think tank on international development based at Columbia University. He has been a member of the Columbia faculty since 2001 and received that university’s highest academic rank (university professor) in 2003. DESCRIPTION:Many Roma communities of Central and Eastern Europe experience systematic environmental racism as one aspect of their exclusion from the mainstream population. It pushes them out into marginal and polluted lands and neighbourhoods\, and deprives them of access to basic environmental services and public utilities. This is the conclusion of ‘Pushed to the Wastelands: Environmental racism against Roma communities in Central and Eastern Europe’\, a forthcoming landmark report\, which is due out on 8 April 2020. \nThe report is a result of a joint collaboration of the European Environmental Bureau\, European Roma Grassroots Organisations (ERGO) network\, the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB) and the Environmental Justice Atlas. \nIn light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions that have accompanied it\, we are inviting you to join our report launch remotely via videoconference. We invite you to carefully read the MEPs for SDGs chapter which details the commitments we expect from MEPs joining this circle.  \nWe will kick off the launch with a debate about ”How to make sure that the European Green Deal becomes a driver of Sustainable Development. DESCRIPTION:By the EESC Sustainable Development Observatory and the European Environment Agency \nThe European Environment Agency’s (EEA) latest report on ‘The European environment – state and outlook 2020’ (SOER 2020)\, published on 4 December\, states that Europe faces environmental challenges of unprecedented scale and urgency. Europe will not achieve its 2030 goals without ambitious action during the next 10 years to address the alarming rate of biodiversity loss\, increasing impacts of climate change and the overconsumption of natural resources.  \nAccelerating the sustainability transition will require fundamental and far-reaching policy action\, engaging all sectors of economy and society to enable systemic change\, while leaving no one behind. The need for such far-reaching change is reflected in the Commission’s European Green Deal\, which emphasises the importance of ambitious transformations to tackle climate change and environment-related challenges\, and the opportunities that these could create for a just and inclusive transition. \nThe EESC Sustainable Development Observatory and the European Environment Agency will jointly host a public event on 12 February 2020 (9h00-13h00)\, aiming to engage a broad range of civil society organisations to discuss the core messages of the SOER 2020 report and their implications for actions in support to ongoing policy processes\, in particular those related to the European Green Deal. \nThe event will look at ways to boost the role of civil society for a just transition towards sustainability and to translate knowledge into action. It will also discuss how to foster the engagement and active participation of all stakeholders\, including youth\, in accelerating the shift towards a more sustainable Europe. \nRegistrations will open in the week of 13 January.

DESCRIPTION:The Lifelong Learning Platform (LLLP) will be holding the 9th edition of its iconic LLLWeek on 2-6 December 2019 in Brussels. The LLLWeek has become a milestone in the European education agenda\, thanks to the support of civil society actors\, Members of the European Parliament\, and other representatives of the European institutions (European Commission\, European Council\, European Economic and Social Council). The LLLPlatform is proud to announce that the LLLWeek2019 will take place in cooperation with the Finnish Presidency of the Council of the EU\, the Youth intergroup and the Lifelong Learning Interest Group of the European Parliament\, as well as partners such as CONCORD Europe and ECAS. \nThe Lifelong Learning Platform will tackle the topic of “Learning democracy\, values and participation”\, a theme encompassed throughout the year for LLLP. 2019 is a crucial year for Europe\, as the political landscape changed with the May elections: through this topic\, the LLLPlatform will seek to bring back the discussions around citizenship education\, active citizenship\, and the values that inform our democracies. Following the many inputs of the Lifelong Learning Interest Group of the European Parliament\, the thrust of its membership\, and the European momentum\, the Lifelong Learning Platform hopes to build an arena in which to debate the importance of civic participation in political life at all levels – local\, regional\, national\, European\, and even international – and the role that a lifelong learning approach to citizenship has to play. \nWhy a lifelong learning week? \nLifelong learning covers education and training across all ages and in all areas of life. It enables citizen’s emancipation and full participation in society in its civic\, political\, social and economic dimensions. A humanistic and holistic approach to learning\, from the cradle to the grave\, is of continued relevance in today’s world and a viable foundation for the rethinking of education. The Lifelong Learning Week aims to raise awareness of the fact that lifelong learning answers many challenges of modern societies. Fostering a comprehensive approach to education is especially important when it comes to building learning societies\, by making sure that our citizens are fully equipped with the competences they need in the 21st century. The paradigm shift to lifelong learning means recognising that learning is taking place in various contexts – be it formal\, non-formal and informal. It implies changing the ways we provide and receive education\, the ways we assess learning and the ways we work and live together. \nFormat \nDuring the LLLWeek\, participants will be taken into the topic of choice\, starting from the context in which lifelong learning and education operate in Europe to build active citizens. We will subsequently delve into the policy framework that is supposed to provide the tools necessary to understand our society and the changes it undergoes. Different approaches can be deepened\, as they all build up to the same overarching objective: \n\n Global citizenship education\n Learning democracy\n Promoting values\n\nIn fact\, all of these will contribute to the goal that the Lifelong Learning Platform has always been pursuing: better societies through education and lifelong learning.

DESCRIPTION:SDG Implementation in European Countries \nWorkshop for CSOs and CSO Platforms    \nOn 25 November 2019 from 10:00 to 17:00\, the SDG Watch Europe especially invites its members from national platforms\, civil society coalitions or loose NGO networks for a set of capacity-building workshops and exchanges. In many cases\, parliaments are insufficiently involved in the SDG processes and can thus not realize their checks-and-balances role. Furthermore\, keeping in mind the speedy work process in parliaments and short-term political challenges\, the SDGs are often too broad for the day-to-day life of parliamentarians.  \n In this session we want to discuss: \n\nWhat are good and bad experiences of strategies to include the SDGs in parliamentarian processes? How to start and keep them onboard?\nWhat kind of advocacy and training structures are useful to get them more engaged? What is meaningful participation\, critical monitoring\, legitimate opposition?\nHow to deal with conservative parliaments?\n\nWorkshop 2 on Communication: Rethinking SDG Awareness Raising   \nWhy make the SDGs a top-down PR process if you can tap into the potential of telling stories close to people’s hearts? In this workshop we want to discuss examples of how to raise awareness on the SDGs in a way that motivates and leads to political engagement\, without patronizing people. What are good strategies to reach people and overcome the gap between knowing and doing? \nIn this session we want to discuss: \n–       What are innovative ways of communicating the SDGs? \n–       What are ways to link the SDG to topics that are relevant for the public and create political pressure? \n–       What is the role of CSOs in communicating the SDGs – keeping in mind the agenda’s flaws and unambitious parts as well as its watchdog role concerning political processes? \nWorkshop 3 on Engagement: Connecting with Social Movements \nPower to the people – an idea that in the last couple of years has once again become visible. All over Europe and the world\, social movements are growing and people are voicing their political concerns\, calling for actions and using various forms of protest to disrupt traditional lines of thinking.  \nIn this session we want to discuss: \n–      What kind of role do social movements play in the implementation of sustainability? Is sustainability reflected in their strategies and in what way? \n–       Where do their successes lie\, where are their limits? \n–       And how can CSOs engage\, interact and partner with social movements in a meaningful way? \nOpen Discussion in World Café
