SUMMARY:The Sustainable Development Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Sustainable Development Festival\nTo access the Inauguration of the event\, please click here \nFollowing the success of the previous editions\, and five years after the adoption of the UN 2030 Agenda\, the yearly Sustainable Development Festival returns with its fifth edition. The 2021 edition will take place from September 28nd to October 14th. \nThanks to the reputation acquired\, and to the growing mobilization of Italian society on the themes of sustainable development\, the event will represent a further step to encourage Italy to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASviS)\, that brings together over 300 organizations from the economic and social spheres\, organizes the Festival together with its members and with the support of the partners and tutors\, over a period of 17 days\, as many as the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN’s 2030 Agenda[1]. The initiative constitutes a single widespread and inclusive event\, comprising hundreds of events organized throughout the national territory. \nThe Festival was created to raise awareness among growing segments of the population on social\, economic and environmental sustainability\, going beyond subject-matter experts\, in order to foster a cultural shift in individual and collective behaviors\, and to stimulate “bottom-up” requests that commit the Country’s leadership to comply with the agreements undertaken in the UN. Furthermore\, the Festival wants to give voice to citizens\, businesses\, national and local administrations\, universities and civil society in order to foster dialogue and the sharing of best practices on the issues of the 2030 Agenda. \nThe Festival is a unique experience at international level that allows to reach millions of people in Italy every year thanks to the participation of hundreds of organizations all over the Country\, the active role played by universities and the opening of “sustainable development squares” in a number of major Italian cities. This stimulates an unprecedented reflection on the future of our Country\, of Europe and the world.  In 2021\, for the second time\, the Festival was nominated as a finalist for the SDG Action Awards of the UN SDG Action Campaign\, for it being an innovative initiative and a unique experience in the world.

SUMMARY:LOCOMOTION Stakeholder Workshop
DESCRIPTION:By EEB \nWhat? We are sharing with you this opportunity to have a say in the indicators used for modelling policy scenarios for the sustainable transition to a low-carbon society. \n Why? A lot of the existing energy and climate models out there do not really cover social and demographic aspects more broadly. So we are looking for people who work on these issues and this can be health aspects\, wellbeing as well as migration etc. The goal is to ensure our models tackle the global societal issues deemed most pressing and to gain understandings about how such societal challenges and risks manifest and interact. \n When? Tuesday October 20th at 11-13 CEST \nHow? If you are happy to participate\, please register here. We will send you further details on the project and the planned session. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar with Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz. Rewriting the rules
DESCRIPTION:by Nyt Europa \nWednesday 15. April 2020 at 17:00 to 18:00 \nRegistration: https://nyteuropa.nemtilmeld.dk/113/ \nNyt Europa (New Europe) has invited Professor and Nobel Laureate in Economics Joseph E. Stiglitz to talk about the European Economy in and beyond the Corona Crisis. His newest book “Rewriting the Rules of the European Economy” from January 2020\, Professor Stiglitz argues that the European economy has been ruled by several decades of strong neoliberal influence. \nWith a speed we have not experienced before\, the European economy is heading towards recession due to the Corona crisis. The crisis has and will have major economic and financial consequences across the world. But how should the EU and its member states prioritize and organize the economy in these times in a way that can build towards a new economy in the future\, which in fact serves the people and the planet? What can we learn from the last financial crisis? Is this the end of the euro\, or the start of something new? Professor Stiglitz will touch upon this and more as he dives into the matter of the impending fiscal crisis in the wake of the current health crisis. \nThe online conference will take place Wednesday 15 April @ 17.00-18.00 (Brussels-time) on Zoom. \nYou need to sign up at the link below and we will send you a confirmation. Just before the event\, you will receive the link to join the online conference. \nYou are more than welcome to write your questions and comments below now which we will do our best to include in the conversation with the Professor. \nWe look forward to seeing you all soon for a fruitful discussion in our online community. \nJoseph E. Stiglitz is an American economist and a professor at Columbia University. He is also the co-chair of the High-Level Expert Group on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress at the OECD\, and the Chief Economist of the Roosevelt Institute.  A recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences (2001) and the John Bates Clark Medal (1979)\, he is a former senior vice president and chief economist of the World Bank and a former member and chairman of the (US president’s) Council of Economic Advisers. In 2000\, Stiglitz founded the Initiative for Policy Dialogue\, a think tank on international development based at Columbia University. He has been a member of the Columbia faculty since 2001 and received that university’s highest academic rank (university professor) in 2003. In 2011 Stiglitz was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Known for his pioneering work on asymmetric information\, Stiglitz’s work focuses on income distribution\, risk\, corporate governance\, public policy\, macroeconomics and globalization. He is the author of numerous books\, and several bestsellers. His most recent titles are People\, Power\, and Profits\, Rewriting the Rules of the European Economy\, Globalization and Its Discontents Revisited\, The Euro and Rewriting the Rules of the American Economy. \nNyt Europa is a Danish organization founded in 1998 with the overall objective to promote civic engagement on a Danish and European level. We work for a more sustainable\, progressive and democratic Europe and believe that the EU institutions play a pivotal role in solving the challenges we face in Europe today. Nyt Europa creates public activities – debates\, talks\, workshops\, exhibitions\, educational programs\, conferences etc. – in order to initiate and strengthen public participation and knowledge. We particularly focus on reaching out to citizens who do not necessarily engage in EU political issues. Therefore\, we aim for the events as well as the communication to be creative\, innovative and inclusive\, and we host the events in different cities and on a variety of platforms.

SUMMARY:‘Pushed to the Wastelands: Environmental racism against Roma communities in Central and Eastern Europe’ report launch
DESCRIPTION:Many Roma communities of Central and Eastern Europe experience systematic environmental racism as one aspect of their exclusion from the mainstream population. It pushes them out into marginal and polluted lands and neighbourhoods\, and deprives them of access to basic environmental services and public utilities. This is the conclusion of ‘Pushed to the Wastelands: Environmental racism against Roma communities in Central and Eastern Europe’\, a forthcoming landmark report\, which is due out on 8 April 2020. \nThe report is a result of a joint collaboration of the European Environmental Bureau\, European Roma Grassroots Organisations (ERGO) network\, the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB) and the Environmental Justice Atlas. \nIn light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions that have accompanied it\, we are inviting you to join our report launch remotely via videoconference. Please join us on 8 April\, 10am-12pm. \nIn a first session (45 min)\, we will briefly share the main finding of the report with interventions from the researchers and present the main recommendations for the EU’s post-2020 Roma policy framework. \nThe presentation of the report will be followed by parallel workshop sessions (60 min) focusing on concrete next steps and a summary. \nIf you would like to participate please register here by 2 April the latest. \nWe will send out links to join the meeting to all registered participants.
